I get lots of questions about what products I use on my hair and the answer used to be loads of different stuff. I have been lucky with having thick hair, on the whole, but what most people don’t know is that for as long as I can remember, I have been suffering with moderately severe, undiagnosed scalp conditions. Some products make it worse, others keep it at bay, but until now, I haven’t found anything that provides an ongoing solution. Enter my new Monpure scalp care & hair care regime! Plus, read on for my current hair styling routine with products and favourite tools.

You may not have heard of the Monpure range* because it’s brand new. Also, the founders, who are so passionate about scalp care being the key to tackling all hair issues, had the added challenge of trying to launch a new brand in the midst of a global pandemic. What terrible luck!

But there is a positive, because, while we have all lost many elements of freedom that we have long taken for granted, we have been gifted with time, which has long been undervalued.

I for one have had more time to address some things that needed to be tackled, and one of them was my scalp, one of the biggest factors that has damaged my self-esteem over the years. But first of all, let me tell you a bit about Monpure.

What is Monpure?

For Monpure scalp care is where everything starts. This new hair brand is less about hair and much more about scalp. Obviously, none of us get to show off our scalps but they are the hidden heroes when it comes to hair. And if you want to avoid hair issues, which include hair loss, thinning hair, flat, dull and lifeless locks, then you need to consider scalp care in the same way that you do skincare.

Monpure have a concise range of luxury, sustainable, and highly effective products that look to treat, and care for the scalp, with the ultimate aim of giving you luscious locks.

My Hair in Lockdown

So I was long overdue a hair cut and had one booked in for March 2020 and then lockdown happened. It was a hair disaster because I’d got to the point where my hair looked flat, matte and really lacking lustre, and I felt like all I really needed was to chop off the ‘deadness’ and start again. I had two options:- chop it off myself, or attempt to give it a new lease of life.

Lucky for me, my box of Monpure products arrived in the post before I could get the scissors out! The trio of products I have been using got my hair shining and bouncing from the first use. I was instantly impressed.

Scalp Issues

My scalp was in a terrible state at the start of lockown. I have always suffered with dryness and flakiness, much to my shame during my school years and beyond, and I’ve lived ready to make sure there’s no evidence of this around my hairline or on my clothes for as long as I can remember. I know I do a good job of this because people are often surprised that I have scalp problems.

It gets worse with stress, which was very noticeable at the start enforced home-time, and it was sore, red and peeling. It’s hard to feel good about your hair with the constant discomfort of an inflamed scalp.

Since I have been using my Monpure regime – which is about six weeks now – my scalp is behaving really well, and my hair stays looking shinier, more alive and bouncier, in spite of the fact that I haven’t had it cut in longer that I care to confess! Plus my hair stays feeling clean, even if I have worked out and sweated a bit. The shampoo has anti-bacteria technology that I believe is key here.

Also, the products are amazing if you colour your hair. I have only had to do my colour once in the whole of lockdown because it hasn’t faded at all. Only now do I need a bit of a root touch up where it has grown out.

My Monpure Scalp Care & Hair Care Regime

I have three Monpure products that I have been using religiously:

  • Clarifying Scalp Scrub
  • Strengthening Silk Protein Shampoo
  • Strengthening Essence-Conditioner

I also use the Follicle Boost Hair Density Serum but the above three are my core. Keep reading for my current hair styling routine with products and favourite tools.

Clarifying Scalp Scrub

This is my absolutely favourite product and I don’t want to be without it!

monpure scalp care clarifying scalp scrub review

Good For: Itchy, flaky and uncomfortable scalps

This is a pre-wash treatment that feels abolutely amazing on the scalp, even if it is sore. The Monpure Clarifying Scalp Scrub contains Argan Oil packed full of essential fatty acids and vitamin E which are key for hair elasticity and shine, but never makes hair feel greasy.

Jojoba Beads do the super gentle exfoliating and give you that amazing scrub that’s as good as getting a back scratch. If you suffer with your scalp, you will know exactly what I mean! They buff away dead skin and product build up, and instantly make your head feel like it can breath!

Shea Butter works to add lightweight non-greasy shine to the hair, but most importantly heals and soothes the scalp to end discomfort.

Finally Stearic Acid lifts away grease and impurities, and I think this is what’s responsible for making my hair always feel clean. Honestly, these days I wash my hair only because I know I should, not because it feels like I need to!

I use this once a week, and I literally sit in the shower (yes I love a sit-down in the shower!!) and massage it into the roots for at least 3 minutes. I often do it for longer because it feels so good. Since I have been using this, the flakiness on my scalp has pretty much vanished.

Strengthening Silk Protein Shampoo

This is ‘clean’ in a bottle!

Good For: Limp, Lifeless Hair & Dry Shampoo Addicts

This shampoo is like no other I have tried. You only need a small amount massaged right into the roots to enhance that instantly clean feel. It is not super foamy, but I can feel it lifting away any impurities and build-up, invigorating my scalp and ‘silkifying’ my hair (in a non silicone way).

I do a second wash using just a tiny dot of product, which foams up beautifully and everything feels so good (especially if I have used the scrub).

It uses Keratin to fortify, rebuild damaged follicles and importantly protect from future damage. You know I love a bit of heat styling so this is really important.

There’s also Aloe Vera for its hydration and anti-inflammatory properties, and vegan Silk Peptides to repair fragile or damaged hair strands, and protect hair and scalp from harmful pollutants as well as bacterial adhesion. I think this is also what’s making my hair feel clean for so long.

Strengthening Essence-Conditioner

This one is the most like the kind of skincare that I love.

Good For: Fine, Thinning or Flyaway  Hair

Forget gloopy thick conditioners that you think are nourishing the hair, this is pretty different. It has an extremely lightweight texture that is designed to be used on the scalp and hair. Like a skincare essence, it floods the hair and scalp with lightweight hydration and prevents hair from getting flyaway.

As well as the Argan Oil and Silk Peptides that the scrub and shampoo contains, this also uses Coconut Oil and Pro Vitamin B5. The coconut is there to moisturise and stimulate hair growth thanks to its essential vitamins and fatty acids, while the pantothenic acid (Pro Vitamin B5) rescues the scalp from flaking.

It essentially works like a sponge to absorb moisture and lock it in, and is also amazing for soothing and healing any little wounds that having an itchy scalp can entail. It gorgeous, and again, a little goes a long way. Just shake it up and don’t over-dispense so you don’t waste your product.

Where to buy Monpure Scalp Care

You can check out the full range at Monpure. The site has some different suggested regimes tailored to what you are trying to achieve, which is really helpful. Just a little warning, this stuff is not cheap but then neither is your hair!! It has worked so well for me, and I couldn’t recommend it more.

My current hair styling routine

I just wanted to include this section as Monpure are not about styling, but styling in a safe way is very important to me. I always put a pump of Kerastase Elixir Ultime* on the lengths and ends of my hair and brush through. Sometimes I use a detangling mist with heat protection too. Most recently it has been the Drunk Elephant Wild Marula Tangle Spray*. The hair mist has changed over the last few years, but that oil never has.

Favourite Styling Tools

I have finally been converted to the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer* to gently dry my hair. I didn’t want to love it, but I do. Honestly, I resisted for so long but it’s so gentle, dries my hair nice and fast, and it doesn’t cause tangles.

If I want to curl my hair with a straightener (my new 2020 skill!), I go for the L’Oreal Steampod 3.0* (review here) which is brilliant for reviving day 2 or 3 hair in a gentle and hydrating way. If I want something a bit less fiddly that I can take into my bathroom, then I use the Dyson Corrale* (review here) which is a treat to use and makes every other traditional straightener I have tried to use seem like an absolute mission!

ghd Curve Soft Curl Tong

If I want to use a tong for my waves and curls, which is truly my confort zone, I have been using the ghd Curve Soft Curl Tong* absolutely loads. If is a tong with a clip is too fiddly for you, then I recommend the Curve  Curve Classic Wand*.  It’s a simple case of wrap and hold for easy waves.

  • Hair is actually dead. You can’t really repair it. It all starts with the scalp & the growing roots which are alive.

  • Oooo I’ve been eyeing Monpure for a while now. Thank you for your review! Xx
