About Elizabeth Arden

Elizabeth Arden is a cosmetics, skin care and fragrance company founded by Elizabeth Arden who was one of the first female entrepreneurs in 20th century America.

The brand opened its first Red Door salon in New York back in 1910, and led the game in skincare and colour cosmetics, and were also the first to ever introduce travel sized products.

They launched the iconic 8 Hour Cream in 1930 and it is still a best-seller today. Elizabeth Arden were leaders in Ceramide technology, launching their first capsule back in 1990. I remember being obsessed with the advertisements that starred Catherine Zeta Jones.

My Review of Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR

I have huge faith in Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide expertise as they were pretty much the sole pioneers of Ceramide technology way back in the day when they launched their first Ceramide Capsules. They now have a full collection capsules for different skincare needs, which you can read about in Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Capsules – Which Ones & What are the Benefits for your Skin?

Additionally, I also fully trialled their Retinol Capsules when they first launched and loved the results I had. Read Elizabeth Arden RETINOL Ceramide Capsules Review for more info on those capsules.

Impressively, they have already mastered gentle skincare with Retinol treatments and the Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR Ceramide Rapid Skin-Renewing Water Cream takes this one step further as it uses next generation Retinoid technology for faster results with no downtime or negative effects.

This cream is such a delight to use. If you are new to Retinol, or haven’t used it in a while, Elizabeth Arden recommends easing in gently (see below for more info on that). However, to be completely transparent, I haven’t used any retinol products regularly in a while, and I went straight in with the Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR daily morning and night with absolutely no issues.

The cream has such a lovely nourishing texture that melts into the skin and feels instantly hydrating and comforting. It is called a Water-Cream, however, it doesn’t have that super-light gel texture that lots of water-creams can have. This feels much more luxurious and moisturising without being at all heavy.

As soon as I apply it, it gives my skin a really beautiful glow and I think this is really key to the success I’ve had with it, because it looks so nice on the skin, I want to keep using it. As we know, compliance is key with skincare and achieving real results, and it is easy to stick to a routine with this product because it’s so instantly gratifying.

The benefits I have noticed the most after using the Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR Ceramide cream consistently is a real improvement in texture especially with the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles. Also a feeling of enhanced skin density and firmness.

I actually started to see improvements with this pretty quickly – I’d say after about 7-10 days of twice daily use!

This is super effective because it’s a retinoid product that can be used twice a day. There aren’t many retinols that are suitable for day time use and so normally you can only get the benefits at night time.

With the Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR Ceramide cream, you can treat your skin with Retinol twice a day without sensitising your skin to the sun, or compromising the skin barrier. You just need to ensure you wear your SPF during the day, which I think most of us do anyway! Fabulous!

I am absolutely thrilled with what this cream does to my skin both instantaneously and over time. It has found a firm place in my routine. If you are looking for a super powerful and effective retinoid product without all the associated downsides of retinol, this is for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this product different from other retinol creams?

The Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR Ceramide Rapid Skin-Renewing Water Cream is quite different to many existing products in the Retinol arena because it uses next generation technology to deliver a unique combination of pure Retinol with HPR Retinoid.

HPR ((Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate) has the power of a high strength, highly effective retinol, however, it is formulated to be slowly released so that it is delivered gently to the skin.

This is also combined with Pure Retinol for even more enhanced anti-ageing results. The powerful actives are buffered by Elizabeth Arden’s leading Ceramide technology which ensures that the skin barrier remains supported and intact.

There are also peptides to support collagen production and Hyaluronic Acid to prevent water loss.

Who is this product suitable for?

This cream is suitable for all skin types and anyone looking to see all round anti-ageing benefits including a reduction in the appearance of lines, wrinkles and pores, enhanced skin firmness and all round more youthful-looking skin.

Due to its unique combination of Pure Retinol and HPR in a slow release technology, it is even suitable for first time retinol users and those with sensitive skin types.

How often should I use the product?

I have been using the product daily both morning and night right from when I started using it. However, if you are new to Retinol or have sensitive skin, it is a good idea to slowly introduce the Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR Ceramide Rapid Skin-Renewing Water Cream into your routine.

Start with using it twice a week, day or night, then move up to using it every other day, day or night. Next start using it daily, day or night, and finally move to twice daily. That’s when you will see the greatest results.

Are there any side effects?

As I said in my review, I went straight into using it twice daily, every day and suffered absolutely zero side effects. This is thanks to its unique formulation and combination of Pure Retinol and HPR along with skin strengthening peptides and ceramides.

The Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR Ceramide Rapid Skin-Renewing Water Cream has been formulated to deliver 10 times the potency of pure Retinol yet still be gentle on the skin. You shouldn’t expect to see any of the downsides usually associated with retinol use like skin dryness or inflammation.

Is HPR an alternative to tretinoin or prescription retinoic acid?

This new HPR has been cited as the rising star in the Vitamin A family and many Dermatologists see it as an effective alternative to prescription retinoic acid without the unpleasant side effects which include dryness, peeling, redness, and discomfort.

Is Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR a serum or a moisturiser?

Whilst many skincare products that contain retinol serve as your serum step, the Elizabeth Arden Retinol + HPR has been designed to take the place of your moisturiser. This makes it a very hardworking product as it has the power to deliver active ingredients to the skin as well as hydrate and moisturise.
