How to Prevent Dry Skin in Winter

The Best Skin Tips for Winter – Prevent Dry Skin

Having a good Winter skincare regime can help prevent skin drying out and becoming dull.

Murad is one of my go-to skincare brands, as you will know if you’ve been a reader for a while. They have an amazing range of products that are absolutely perfect to protect your skin in the winter months.

What causes dry skin in the winter?

As temperatures fall during the winter months and the air gets drier, your skin can really start to suffer. This can lead to your skin barrier being compromised with loss of hydration and potential inflammation.

When the moisture barrier is weakened, it becomes less able to protect itself from environmental aggressors, everyday stress, and the natural ageing process. So the main goal is to make sure your products are focussed on maintaining the all important barrier.

What helps with dry skin in the winter?

You need to ensure that you avoid any products that could strip the skin of its natural hydration. This includes using a gentle, barrier boosting cleanser, adding in a serum and selecting richer formulas in your moisturisers for both day and night.

Best Skin Tips for Winter

Here are some small changes you can make to help your skin adapt to colder weather and prevent it getting dry.

Upgrade Your Cleanser

The cleansing step is always a great opportunity to add in an extra layer of care. Using the right product can really boost your hydration levels, protect the skin barrier and prevent skin dryness.

One of my best skin tips for winter is to use a cleanser with prebiotics to help balance the skin’s microbiome.

Murad Prebiotic Multicleanser

Murad’s Prebiotic 4-in-1 MultiCleanser is perfect for winter skin. It’s a super luxurious gel-to-oil, makeup-removing cleanser that not only melts all makeup, SPF and impurities, but it also works to nourish the skin with prebiotics, hyaluronic acid and squalane.

It leaves my skin completely clean, super soft and really plumped and hydrated. If you need something really effective and super gentle, you should definitely check this out.

Add in a serum to hydrate skin in winter

If you don’t already use a serum in your skincare routine, winter is the best time to add one in for extra moisturising and anti-ageing benefits.

Serums usually have a light, thin consistency but contain a potent concentration of active ingredients to pack a punch and target skin concerns. They are particularly great for dry skin so one of my best skin tips for winter is to add one in.

Murad Revitalixir Recovery Serum

Murad’s Revitalixir Recovery Serum would be an excellent addition to your regime because you can use it all over including the eye area.

The serum contains lots of little spheres that burst on contact and work to intensely hydrate, tackle dryness, and smooth out lines.

It’s great for stressed out skin because it uses a skin-relaxing blend of neuropeptide, paracress and cannabis sativa seed oil plus niacinamide. The blend helps calm stress signals, refine texture and energise the skin.

I like to apply a light layer of this and allow it to sink in for 5 minutes before applying moisturiser. My skin just drinks it up, especially in the winter months.

Swap your lightweight moisturiser for a richer cream

Changing up your cream is one of my best skin tips for winter. Using a richer moisturiser doesn’t have to mean you need to use something heavy. You just need something that provides superior and long-lasting hydration to prevent dry skin.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture

The Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture cream is amazing for providing deep and long lasting hydration and nourishment in a light, super comfortable formula.

It uses advanced hyaluronic acid technology to provide 24-hour hydration, and also coconut extract to improve moisture retention.

It’s a stunning formula – it feels instantly plumping and soothing and just leaves skin glowing and smooth. This texture is amazing under makeup.

You can use Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture day and night, but if you would like something a little richer for night time, check out Murad’s Intense Recovery Cream, one of their latest innovations. You can read my review here. One of the best skin tips for winter is to use a richer formula at night to promote greater repair and lock in more moisture.

It super rich and gorgeous, and absolutely perfect to relieve severe skin dryness and calm stressed skin.

It contains potent microalgae extract which smooths the look of facial tension, stress lines and redness, whilst deeply moisturising. It has a buttery, silky texture that effortlessly melts into the skin and I always wake up looking plump and rested when I use this at night.

Don’t Forget SPF

I can talk about my best skin tips for winter without mentioning SPF. Just because the sun isn’t necessarily shining, you must still use your sunscreen products to protect you from UV exposure.

Best Skin Tips for Winter: Murad Essential-C Day Moisture SPF30

Murad’s Essential-C Day Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is the perfect product for winter because it has Vitamin C to boost antioxidant protection in a moisturising formula, whilst defending from UV.

It also gives a gorgeous glow and feels super light on the skin. I love it.

Drink enough water

I think we generally tend to feel less thirsty in the winter months which can lead to us not drinking quite as much water as we need. This can lead to dehydration so be sure to up your water intake if you can, or try eating more water-rich foods like raw fruit and vegetables.

Why does my skin get so dry in winter?

This is mainly down to a combination of a drop in the levels of humidity outside and heating insides. Decreased humidity levels make the water in your skin evaporate more quickly, while dry indoor air dries the skin out even more.

Should I use a heavier moisturizer in the winter?

I think it’s a good idea to use a richer texture for your moisturiser during the winter months. This doesn’t have to mean it feels heavy on your skin, but it will be beneficial to include hyaluronic acid, emollients and fatty acids.

Do I need to wear sunscreen in the Winter in the UK?

Whilst it’s extremely unlikely that you will get sunburn during the winter months, this doesn’t mean that you aren’t exposed to UV rays. To help prevent environmental ageing, I recommend using SPF daily.

Please let me know if you need any help on adapting your winter skincare routine.
