PHLUR Missing Person Review – The Skin Scent I Can’t Stop Smelling

There are some fragrances that you smell and immediately know they’re not for you. Then there are the ones that make you want to keep smelling your wrist. PHLUR Missing Person is definitely the latter for me.

I was recently sent three PHLUR fragrances to try, as PHLUR just launched at Sephora UK* (save 15% with code REALLYREESPH), and although I’ve tried some of the brand’s body sprays before, I’d never really explored the actual perfumes. The three I received were Missing Person, Father Figure and Vanilla Skin, and I have to say, I really like all three.

But Missing Person was the one that stood out to me. There was just something about it that I immediately connected with. It’s quite hard to describe because it isn’t a big, obvious fragrance. It’s soft, clean and very close to the skin, but there’s something incredibly familiar about it that I find really appealing.

And the more I’ve worn it, the more intrigued I’ve become by it, partly because sometimes I can smell it beautifully on my skin, and other times I can’t smell it at all!

What is PHLUR Missing Person?

PHLUR Missing Person
PHLUR Missing Person

PHLUR Missing Person is a Floral Musk Eau de Parfum launched in 2022. It was created by perfumer Constance Georges-Picot and is designed to be a soft, intimate “skin scent” rather than a big, projecting perfume.

PHLUR describes it as a fragrance that evokes the lingering scent of someone’s skin, built around comforting white musk with sheer florals and soft woods. And honestly, I think that description gets pretty close to what makes it so appealing.

The fragrance has a very clean, musky quality, but it isn’t simply “clean” in the way that a fresh laundry fragrance is clean. There is something warmer and more human about it.

It’s one of those fragrances that makes you want to keep smelling your wrist.

PHLUR Missing Person Notes

Top notes: Skin Musk, Bergamot Nectar, Sheer Jasmine

Heart notes: Fresh Cyclamen, Neroli Blossom, Orange Flower

Base notes: Australian Sandalwood Oil, Blonde Wood, White Musk

It’s the musk and soft woods that I notice most, although there is a lovely freshness from the florals and bergamot.

I wouldn’t describe it as a traditional floral fragrance at all. Everything seems to melt together to create that clean, soft skin effect.

My PHLUR Missing Person Review

My Review of PHLUR Missing Person
My Review of PHLUR Missing Person

This is the thing I find hardest to explain about Missing Person. It smells familiar.

I can’t tell you exactly what it reminds me of, and I don’t have a particular person or place that I associate it with, but there is something about it that feels recognisable.

It has that clean, comforting quality that makes you want to keep smelling it. It’s not freshly washed laundry exactly, and it’s not a classic soapy fragrance either. It’s warmer and more personal than that. There’s something very soft and comforting about it. And I think that’s why I’ve found myself so drawn to it.

It’s a skin scent

Missing Person is definitely a skin scent. It doesn’t have the big projection or huge trail that you get from some perfumes. It sits close to you, and I think that’s very much the point.

This is not a fragrance that is going to say hello before you do – which I have to confess, is a vibe that I am quite partial to for evenings. Instead, it’s something you catch when you move your arm or get a little waft as you’re going about your day. I actually really like that.

It feels like a personal fragrance rather than something you’re wearing for everyone else.

It’s very much in the “you smell lovely” category rather than the “what perfume are you wearing?” category.

Sometimes I can smell it. Sometimes I can’t.

And this is the really weird thing about Missing Person. Sometimes I can smell it on my skin and it is absolutely gorgeous. I’ll suddenly get a little waft and think, oh, that smells SO good. Then there are other times when I literally can’t smell it at all. It’s as though I’m not wearing perfume.

I also feel like the more I wear it, the more I get to know it, and can smell it more. But then sometimes I can’t! I don’t know!!

Comforting and clean

For me, this is a very comforting fragrance. It smells clean without being clinical, and musky without being heavy. There’s something warm underneath the cleanliness, which is what stops it feeling like a straightforward fresh fragrance.

There’s also something really familiar about it, which I think is what makes it so comforting for me. I can’t identify exactly what it reminds me of, but it has that lovely feeling of something you’ve smelled before without being able to put your finger on what it is.

How long does Missing Person last?

This is a difficult one to answer because my experience is so inconsistent. It doesn’t have huge sillage, but I don’t think that necessarily means it isn’t lasting.

As I have said, there are times when I can’t smell it on myself, only to suddenly catch it again later. It’s almost like rediscovering it every time. And although I find it slightly bizarre that I can sometimes smell it and sometimes can’t, I actually think that adds to the fascination.

I wouldn’t buy Missing Person if you want a perfume with massive projection and a trail that follows you around. But if you like the idea of a fragrance that stays close to the skin, this is much more that kind of perfume.

My PHLUR Missing Person Verdict

PHLUR Missing Person is a soft, clean and incredibly comforting skin scent. It isn’t loud and it isn’t trying to fill a room. It’s personal, subtle and very easy to wear.

For me, there’s something particularly appealing about the familiarity of it. I can’t quite put my finger on what it reminds me of, but I know I really like the feeling it gives me. And then there’s the strange disappearing act!

Sometimes I can smell it and think it’s absolutely beautiful. Sometimes I can’t smell it at all. But then I’ll catch it again. And every time I do, I remember exactly why I like it so much. It’s personal, subtle and very easy to wear.

If you like DedCool Xtra Milk…

If you’ve read my review of DedCool Xtra Milk, you’ll know I’m already a fan of this kind of fragrance for certain moods. Xtra Milk is softly creamy, smooth and skin-like, with that lovely clean-but-warm quality that makes you want to keep smelling it.

Missing Person gives me a similar feeling, although I find it less creamy and a little more sheer and musky. Xtra Milk has more of that cosy, cottony softness, whereas Missing Person feels more like clean skin to me.

Interestingly, I have the same slightly strange experience with both fragrances where I can smell them beautifully when I first apply them, then seem to lose them completely, only for them to suddenly reappear later in little wafts. I actually mentioned exactly the same thing in my Xtra Milk review, so perhaps I’m particularly susceptible to this type of skin scent!

The big difference is that, between the two, I think I prefer Missing Person. There’s something about it that feels more familiar to me, and I find it particularly comforting.
