The Perfume Society is the creation of Lorna McKay and Jo Fairley whose biggest passions lie within the wonderful world of fragrance. Lorna is an industry expert and Jo is a renowned beauty journalist and together they aim to demystify the fascinating yet sometimes rather inaccessible arena. If notes, ingredients and accords just confuse you but you wish they didn’t, then keep on reading.

I met Lorna and she’s incredible! If anyone can make perfume real for you, she can!
There’s a Perfume Society website which give an in-depth yet easy to understand look at the perfumes we wear and a guide to finding others we love. It includes fragrance history, ingredients, fragrance families, perfume houses, launches and all the latest news. There’s also a special Perfume Society subscriber service that provides lots of extra benefits.
The Perfume Society Subscriber Service includes:
- Invitations to fragrance events, from Q+As with the great ‘noses’ through to make your own fragrance workshops and fragrance ‘history days’ (in collaboration with well-known and entertaining industry names), as well as in-store shopping and launch-related activities
- The Scented Letter, a beautiful 32-page e-zine devoted entirely to fragrance and the sense of smell. Offered eight times a year, this features contributions from leading fragrance journalists (in the first issue, Vicci Bentley will share her experiences of creating a fragrance herself, with Angela Flanders), as well as all the latest news from the scented world.
- ‘Fragrance Education’ Discovery Box. The organisation’s joining gift introduces subscribers to the key fragrance families through guided sampling, with beautifully-photographed postcard ‘smelling notes’ to help truly explore the fragrance. A pack of Perfume Society ‘mouilettes’, or fragrance blotters, is included in this luxurious box, together with the Society’s ‘Note Book’, so that subscribers can share their thoughts and feelings about the scents through words.
- Privileged access to ‘themed’ Perfume Discovery Boxes. Each new box will be offered exclusively to subscribers for a period of time, at a special subscriber price: a wonderful introduction to new launches, classics and creations from ‘rising star’ perfumers.
- VIP access to subscriber-only elements of the website. This will include videos, podcasts, exclusive web features, as well as the calendar of bookable events.
- Monthly ‘Perfume Group’ activities. The Perfume Society already has a waiting list of would-be subscribers keen to set up a Perfume Society Perfume Group – ‘like a book club, without the homework!’, says Jo.
- A subscriber card. Subscribers become ‘Very Important Perfumistas’ – literally, card-carrying perfume-lovers.
The Perfume Society FReD
And if you’re looking for a new fragrance and fast, then you need to meet FReD! He’s a online virtual fragrance advisor that uses your current preferences to help you discover something new you’ll love!
It really does sound like somewhere that you can indulge your passion for fragrance and learn more skills to make you more confident about your choices. I love fragrance but find it very hard to express what I like and even to recognise notes sometimes, so I can see this being something that lots of people will love.
Visit The Perfume Society for more information. Subscriptions are currently£25 per year.

Hi I am managing a new fragrance store, ‘the perfume gallery’ and would love to join as I would like to start creating our own product training packages to improve consultant selling techniques, kind regards Melanie Parker.
