The Ouai brand, created by hairstylist to the stars, Jen Atkin launched back in 2016 and was an instant success. The products are loaded with nourishing ingredients and all smell absolutely gorgeous. So gorgeous, in fact, that they created a whole fragrance line (read about that here).

What is Ouai Daily Haircare?

The new collection, which replaces the brand’s previous shampoos and conditioners, is designed for your hair’s texture. You simply need to pick from fine, medium or thick which means no more worrying about which one of your concerns you should prioritise. Most people have multiple hair concerns, so this makes working out what to pick less overwhelming.

Three Formulations

  • Fine Hair  – will fortify strength in the hair using biotin (vitamin B7), to prevent breakage. Delivers weightless body and makes hair feel fuller and thicker thanks to the benefits of chia seed oil
  • Medium Hair – has just the right mix of cleansing and nourishing power. Uses  kumquat fruit extract (rich in vitamin A, B & C) to leave hair shiny. Coconut oil works to seal split ends
  • Thick Hair  – designed for hair that can feel heavy and works to intensely clean the hair and eliminate frizz. Shea butter and avocado oil hydrate and seal in moisture.

What hair type are you?

Jen has deivised a quick and easy way to decide what hair type you have and them make your selection.

She says you are fine if one strand of hair is invisible to the eye, you are medium if you take one strand of hair and you can feel a little something in-between your fingers. Finally, if you can play tug of war with a strand of hair, then you are thick.

Ouai Daily Haircare – My Review

So I have tested out the Medium shampoo and conditioner. I am probably more thick, but I guess this is a good way to test out the middle ground that perhaps quite a lot of people would sit in.

Ouai Medium Shampoo

First off, I really love the packaging. It looks super chic and minimal in the shower and you will be pleased to know that it is eco-friendly too. The bottles and caps can be completely recycled and they are actually made from PCR (post-consumer resin) which is recycled material from existing bottles and other plastics. They are also launching refill pouches soon too.

Also the range is completely sulfate-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, phthalate-free, SLS & SLES free, and also not tested on animals.

The Medium Shampoo and Conditioner was really lovely to use. It smells absolutely gorgeous (the Mercer Street scent) and the textures are great. The shampoo gives a gorgeous lather which cleanses the hair thoroughly without that feeling of your scalp being stripped. I have a dodgy sensitive scalp, so this is important to me.

The Conditioner feels really nourishing and even though I could probably use the Thick products, I feel like this gave my ends the right amount of hydration.

It left my hair feeling instantly silky and soft in the shower. I blow-dried my hair and gave it a super quick tong, and was really happy with the results.

My Other Favourite Ouai Products

So Ouai is a brand that is pretty much always in my hair stash, so I thought I’d quickly share some of my top products.

Ouai Texturizing Spray

I am huge fan of the Ouai Texturising Hairspray*, and when the brand first launched they could hardly keep this product in stock in the UK.

It’s great – no white residue, it gives the hair shape and hold, and boosts volume at the same time. Perfection.

Ouai Wave Spray

The Wave Spray is a must for those with long hair wanting natural looking beachy waves. This is perfect for minimal effort texure. Sometime I spritz it through the lengths, pop my hair up in a bun for a while, and then take it out for soft bouncy waves.

The wave spray has memory and creates shape and texture in the hair. You can use it like a salt spray (but it doesn’t contain salt so it doesn’t dry out the hair) and it’s also great to prime hair before blow drying and heat styling.

Ouai Hair Oil

The Hair Oil is another of my faves. It is great on wet hair for long lasting hydration and also brilliant scrunched through dry ends to bring my hair back to life with lustre without killing my waves or making it greasy.
