Part of Neostrata’s targeted skincare range, Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50 is my hands down favourite sunscreen.
I have had such problems with sunscreen. It can be white and shiny, thick and greasy, It repels makeup and makes my skin go nuts. Sunscreen is anathema to my skin. I have adult acne and most sunscreens bring me out in a face full of spots. I feel terrible admitting this as a skincare obsessive, but last year I stopped wearing it altogether, I just couldn’t bear the acne.
Call me a drama queen but I felt quite nervous trying Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50. Anyone who gets cystic acne will know that when you get a break out, it doesn’t just go away overnight, it sometimes takes weeks for those marks to fade. So trying out a new product that may well flare things up is a cause for trepidation. But thank god I did!
Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50- What’s in it?
I’ll tell you a bit more about this diamond of a product. It’s a mineral sunscreen with broad spectrum UVA and UVB coverage. There’s a difference between UVA and UVB- UVB protection is denoted by the SPF number in the sunscreen and it means the ability of the sunscreen to block the sun rays that burn your skin. UVA rays are the sun rays that cause ageing effects like wrinkles and pigmentation, so definitely something you want to protect yourself from. The UVA protection in a product is denoted by stars or + signs. Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50 comes with the maximum UVA protection you can get (4+s).
- Titanium and Zinc Oxide- provide the sun protection
- Lactobionic Acid- Preserves the skin’s collagen and therefore firmness
- Antioxidants EGCG Green Tea Extract and Vitamin E to neutralise free radicals and preserve healthy cell DNA
- The base is silicone to provide slip.
Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50 is
- £34 for 50ml,
- Ultra sheer
- Has a sheer tint that blends with natural skin tone
- Has skincare benefits

Shake vigorously for 15 seconds, Apply liberally 15 minutes prior to sun exposure.
Sun protection can come from chemical (like Oxybenzone or Octinoxate) or mineral agents (like Zinc and Titanium oxides). I think that the problem I have with most sunscreens are that chemical protection agents irritate my skin. Most physical sunscreens give that sunscreeny white cast to the skin, not so Ultra Sheer Physical Protection- it sinks into the skin without a trace.
Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50- Review
Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection comes in a squeezy bottle with a narrow nib. The product needs a really good shake before use, otherwise it will separate. Do not squirt without shaking! you’ll just get oil. It’s quite thin in consistency and has a neutral flesh coloured tint. I use Ultra Sheer after my skincare and before makeup.
Ultra Sheer Physical Protection is tinted but it doesn’t really have any coverage so I generally still use foundation on top, but if you have great skin you could probably get away with just the sunscreen. What I love about Ultra Sheer, as well as its non comedogenic properties, is that it is invisible. It claims to be mattifying, but its finish is more satin really. I love that it has skincare effects too. I have been using Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection daily for months now. I have experienced no issues with irritation or acne and no sun burn.
It’s safe to say that Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50 has a fan here. It’s nice to be wholly positive about a product. For ladies who struggle to find a sunscreen that doesn’t cause skin issues I would highly recommend trying Neostrata Ultra Sheer Physical Protection SPF50.
