I thought this was pretty interesting. Fortunately (touching wood) I have never suffered with cold sores myself, but I know people that do and they are a true nightmare. Apparently it has been discovered that liquorice contains something called glycyrrhizic acid (GA) which is a cold sore’s worst enemy, and so Liquorice Balm was born!

Although not the most glamorous of statistics, a trial of Liqurice Balm by the Herpes Virus Association found some rather promising results:

  • It reduced the severity and duration of outbreaks for over 73% of subjects tested
  • 83% of subjects using the liquorice balm reported experiencing less severe outbreaks than when using their conventional treatments
  • Testers reported that on average their outbreaks were only half their normal length

I think potentially the best thing about treating cold sores with Liquorice Balm is that as it is made from naturally derived ingredients, you can wear it all the time, so you can conquer a cold sore before it has even started.
Liquorice Balm costs £7.95 for 30g, visit skinshop for more info. As I am not a sufferer I can’t actually test it, but it’s a very pleasant lip balm to use and looks and feels like a regular lip balm. I also found this rather helpful article on 16 Ways to Prevent and Get Rid of Cold Sores.
