La Roche-Posay say that everyone, even sensitive skins can, and should, use retinol. And La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum is here to prove that. Here’s what you need to know their latest launch.

It is often thought that people with sensitive skin should steer clear of products that contain retinol. At the same time, we are always told that retinol is the gold standard in anti-ageing and the only ingredient proven to work on lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. So what can you do if your skin can’t tolerate it?
In response to this dilemma, La Roche-Posay have created Retinol B3.
What is La Roche-Posay Retinol B3?
So this is the deal. This new night time serum still contains 0.3% retinol but it is formulated in such a way that even sensitive skins can’t tolerate it without any of the associated issues.

Concentration & Slow Release Technology
The formula uses 0.1% pure retinol combined with 0.2% retinol palmitate (progressive retinol) that ensures gradual release of the active ingredients. This slow-release technology means retinol is better tolerated and skin cell turnover is slower and gentler, leading to less flaking and irritation.
Compensating Molecules
Also, the presence of compensating molecules, i.e. 2% Niacinamide (vitamin B3) and 10% Glycerin, in turn work to restore the skin barrier and reduce irritation and hyperpigmentation, and also keep skin hydrated by retaining water.
I love that this formula contains Glycerin as it is probably my favourite humectant ingredient. It is super hydrating and keeps skin feeling comfortable and moisturised.
My Thoughts
The texture of this retinol serum is really lovely. It has a luxurious feel; a kind of full-bodied watery serum that sinks into the skin elegantly and feels moisturising and hydrating.

La Roche-Posay recommend using the serum alone after cleansing at night. This slightly deters me as I am a fan of layering my products, and really enjoying my ritual, however, I tried it last night without any other product. It was the quickest bed time routine ever!! Sometimes my skin around my mouth and smile lines can get really red with stronger products, but I had no issues at all.
Half of me expected to wake up with tight, dehydrated skin, but lo and behold, it was calm, smooth and supple in the morning. I am considering actually giving it a proper trial for a while with no other products, but right now, I’m not sure I can commit to just one night time step!!
If you want to get into retinol, and simplify your skincare regime at the same time, this could be for you. Many of us are probably over-using product, so this is a great opportunity to strip things back.
