What different Kiehl’s Retinol Serums are there?
The first retinol serum from Kiehl’s is the Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum which is designed to be a gentle yet super effective serum with slow release technology.

What is Kiehl’s Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum?
First off, I absolutely love this serum. It’s a really potent anti-wrinkle serum which is super effective, but in terms of retinol, it’s really gentle.
One of the biggest downsides associated with a lot of retinol products is sensitivity, dryness and irritation. However, Kiehl’s clever technology in the Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum means you never have to worry about this.
When I first tested this product last year, I was able to include it into my routine every single night without any negative side effects. There was no flaking or redness because the micro-dosing technology ensures it is really gentle.
Who is it for?
This is a Slow-Release Formula with skin-caring ingredients. The retinol is slowly released all through the night, rather than overloading your skin all in one go. This means it is ideal for first time retinol users, or anyone worried about trying retinol.
The formula also contains peptides to boost collagen and strengthen the skin, and also ceramides to repair and care for the skin. This means that I have even been able to recommend it to my sensitive skin friends.
My Review
I tested the Kiehl’s Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum nightly for eight weeks at the end of last year and my skin was really smoothed out, texture was refined, and it felt really firm and bouncy. All without any discomfort.
When I first had this product, I had a spare bottle and gave it to one of my friends. When she joined my new Facebook group, I remember when she answered the ‘favourite skincare product’ membership question, she said this serum!
I spoke about this serum on my Instagram stories much earlier in the year and the feedback from those that had been using it was really positive.
How to use it
It has a gorgeous light and hydrating texture that melts into the skin really nicely. You can even use it around the eyes and I let it sink in for a few minutes before applying my night time moisturiser every night.

Who is it for?

It is recommended for nightly use on skin that is already used to regularly using retinol.
How to Use it
First you need to activate the product.
This is the fun part because the product comes in separate components and you need to mix the Retinol powder into the serum:
- Turn the bottle upside down and remove the bottom cap (don’t throw it away)
- Open up the foil pack and pull out the retinol capsule
- Secure the retinol capsule onto the bottom of the bottle
- Release the pure retinol powder by pressing the button on the capsule
- Shake vigorously to mix the powder into the serum
- Remove capsule, replace with the bottom cap (you can discard the empty capsule)
Application
- Use once per day at night (or start more slowly if you are worried about sensitivity)
- Press the black button 2-3 times to dispense (use the lesser amount at first to be cautious)
- Apply over clean dry skin (avoid the eye area unlike the Daily Micro-Dose Serum)
- Follow with moisturiser

You want to go for the Daily Dose Micro-Serum if you are new to retinol or have sensitive skin. The new Fast Release serum is for if you are used to retinol and want to step it up a gear or two.
As you may be able to see, the textures of each product are different. The Micro-Dose serum has a creamier texture thanks to the ceramides it is formulated with. The Fast-Release serum has a much lighter, more liquid texture, which allows the retinol to absorb into the skin more quickly.
