It’s that time of the year when you’ve either booked your summer holiday and are counting down the days, or are thinking about where to go. And as the time approaches to get the suitcases out, you’ll be in preparation mode.
As well as making sure you’ve got your passport, currency and boarding passes ready, there are some holiday beauty essentials that I wouldn’t go on holiday without and are very much part of my countdown preparation.
Holiday Beauty Essentials – The Pre Holiday Prep
Prickly Heat
If you have ever suffered with prickly heat, you will know the agony it causes, enough to ruin your holiday. I had suffered for a few years and was determined to find a solution. Elemis Tan Accelerator is the only thing I’ve found that stops me from getting prickly heat. I apply as an all over body lotion for at least a week before I’m going away. And as well as stopping prickly heat, any tan I get lasts so much longer and I don’t peel.

Long Lasting Tan
To make a tan last longer without peeling, I use a body scrub before, during and after my holiday. Using a scrub helps to get rid of dead skin cells, which contribute towards peeling. And I find using a scrub means I get a deeper longer lasting tan. I’ve been using Good Things Argan Oil Restoring Body Scrub, which contains no microbeads and smells gorgeous.
Glowing Sunkissed Skin
No one wants to be the stand out pasty-skinned person on the beach, so I start using a gradual tan lotion from spring onwards. St Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Tinted Body Lotion is perfect as it’s a hydrating body lotion which I use every day and as well as offering a gradual tan that builds up over a few days, because it’s a tinted lotion, on the first application you get a instant glow to your skin.

Holiday Beauty Essentials – Holiday Protection
And I’m not talking travel insurance (although of course you do need that as well!). We are all well educated now about wearing high level sun protection and re-applying it several times a day. I always do an all over application at least 30 minutes before I even go in to the Sun, so that the lotion has properly sunk in and this gives a great base and start to a day in the sun.
Sun Screen
Last year was the first time I started using Ladival and I really like that it gives broad spectrum protection, it’s water resistant and great for sensitive skin. It also sinks it quickly, leaving no greasy residue behind.
The last few years I’ve been using a separate and specific sun screen on my face. Maybe too little too late but at least I’m doing it now. Kiko City Filter Sunscreen has a SPF 50 and can be used as a primer before your make up base.

Holiday Beauty Essentials – Holiday Saviours
Mosquitos
Mosquitoes – at best an annoyance, at worst can really impact your holiday. When I last went on holiday to Greece, I found myself a mozzie target, and while the bites were a bit unsightly and itchy on holiday, the itching took on an insane level when I actually returned home. I’m going to Greece again this year, and I’m determined not to be mozzie bait this time. I’ve spent quite some time researching the best repellent and it seems that the classic and affordable Avon Skin So Soft dry oil spray has been used for many years. It doesn’t have that horrible overly chemical smell either that other repellents do. I have high hopes for this and my bare legs.
Dry Sun Damaged Hair
Basking all day in the sun, swimming in the pool or sea and sand can all cause havoc with your hair. I use a hair protecter with sunscreen like the Philip Kingsley Swimcap. It’s like wearing a leave in hair conditioner all day. I put this on in the morning, tie my hair up as I normally would for a strenuous day of sun bathing and then rinse out in the evening and before washing and conditioning my hair as normal.
Keeping Cool
Living in the UK, I’m not used to very hot weather, until going on holiday. And I can find my face overheats and then gets sweaty and red, which can lead to spots and even heat rash. I like to keep my face and chest cool by misting with a cooling spray. Superdrug do a budget friendly Instant Cooling spray for the face and body which is suitably refreshing and helps to stop you overheating.

Wishing you all Happy Holidays.

Not a fan of Ladival at all, I found it really heavy and greasy. I’m still searching for my holy grail sunscreen for body – La Roche Posay anthelios is the best I’ve found for face, despite giving a bit of a white cast.
Hi Clare, have you tried Altruist suncream. I find it amazing, as someone who lived for many years in Australia it’s by far my all time favourite. https://www.reallyree.com/best-budget-sun-cream/
