Before I start, I just have to say that this Braun Silk-épil 5 Epilator is the moment gentle epilator I have ever used (and I have used quite a few!).
Have a little look…

Neat isn’t it?!

It’s a super compact little devil that has 2 speeds and a lovely light to illuminate every hair on your hit list. Ha ha they can’t escape! Of course, like everything else in my life (mainly walking and talking), I do it at top speed. I don’t mess around!

It has Close-Grip-Technology which involves 40 tweezers engineered to close at the optimal angle and grip hair really close to the skin for removal of hairs as short as 0.5mm. I have found it incredibly effective.

It’s also really fast. I set myself the challenge of doing my lower (dare I say it, rather hairy) legs fifteen minutes before leaving for the school run. And with some frantic and fast up and down action, I pretty much succeeded.
As I said, it is by far the gentlest epilator I have used. I didn’t bother with the Comfort System that includes massaging rollers and a cooling mitt.  I went straight for the efficiency cap, swapping out the head with the massaging rollers because I’m hardcore! I want results and I want them fast!!

I asked on twitter what people most wanted to know about this epilator and this was what came back:
@JayneJReadPain factor please!
@BigFashionista: how much it hurts. End of 😉
@KarenaSedgwick: If they really work….. I’ve never tried one!
@janesgrapevine: two vital points. How much they hurt and how much hair they remove.
‏@katelawson_:  will it make me cry/scream? 😉
@Amylisam: how much does it hurt!?
So basically it is mainly about the pain, which I will tackle in a second.

In terms of effectiveness, I find it extremely effective indeed. Ten minutes every couple of weeks have kept  my lower legs pretty much hair-free and the regrowth is soft with no sign of prickles! You just have to make sure you exfoliate (I am addicted to that with my faux tan habit) to prevent any in-growing hairs.

From experience I know that the longer you use it, the finer the hair growth gets, so I can only see this getting easier and easier.
So on to the pain factor. Well to be honest, I never really care about pain when it comes to beauty because, as I said, I am pretty hardcore! I always do everything at top intensity and top speed because I want results!
But I have to say, this really is rather painless, especially considering what it is actually doing. I barely feel a thing, and only a very slight sting in the more sensitive areas (for me, on the inside leg just below the knee).
It is so gentle that my legs don’t even get red and I can get on with my day as usual. Previous epilators have left my skin red, with raised areas, so this is a massive improvement.

This epilator definitely delivers the results I am looking for. It is not completely smooth like it is one second after shaving, but for me that feeling literally lasts for one second, so this is way better! It is smooth enough for me and stays that way for a couple of weeks.
The Braun Silk-épil 5 Epilator Legs 5180 is £74.99 but is currently on sale at Argos for £48.99 which is a bit of a bargain! There are other models available that you can use all over your body as well.
Let me know if you have any questions!

  • A few years ago, I had an epilator and I could spend ages using i, only to end up getting the razor out to remove all the prickles still left.

For me, like you, pain is not an issue, it’s all about results. I must admit, I’ve been hearing good things about this epilator lately and reading your positive review too makes me wonder if the time has come to revisit the leg-epi experience!

  • I admire you for being brave when it comes to beauty. This epilator seem working great on you. I tried waxing and I got used to pain already so I think I can manage this epilator. 🙂

  • I use a philips epilator and I like it but it leaves me red spots after using it 🙁
I’d like to try this one!!

  • I use the Silk epil 7 and it’s fab! I find that the more I use it, the less it hurts. I’d never go back to shaving now.

  • i bought it (the one which you can use all over the body) and used it for the first time it IS painful, maybe because i have a lot of hair (hormonal problems) so it did hurt so much that i didn’t even do one whole leg. its painless on the hands tho (because of less hair over there maybe) i can’t even imagine epilating my arm pits with it, its gonna hurt like a bitch but maybe i’ll try once i get more comfortable with it
