You may have read my previous post on men’s skin care and the importance of cleansing. As promised here are my products recommendations for men’s cleansers and face washes.
I find a rinse off cleanser generally the most effective for male skin. They’re convenient and easy to use, with no faff of tissue or cotton pads required (which can get stuck in stubble / beards). However you still need to take individual skin type and concerns in to consideration when choosing a suitable product.
Women have this part easy, as there is much more variety available to them with most brands catering to different skin types / concerns, offering a number of different cleansers within their range. For men, however we need to be a bit more savvy and will often have to shop around for suitable product ranges as most brands will only have one “men’s range” which may or may not be suitable for your skins needs.
Take note skin care brands. All men do not have the same skin type!
Here are a round up of some of the best men’s facial washes and cleansers available to buy on the high street and online depending on skin type and budget.
Best for Oily Skin
When dealing with an oily skin the key is to chose a product that is deep cleansing but without stripping or drying the skin out. Oily skin is a gift, not a curse. Treat it well and you’ll reap the rewards later in life. Men have a tendency to be over aggressive with their skin, however this can result in over stimulation and increased sebaceous activity.
The Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser is a 2-in1 facial wash and toner to remove excess oils and dirt, without over drying the skin. It contains Witch Hazel for natural astringent properties plus the purifying effects of sage leaf and rosemary extract. The aloe will also help to calm the skin. Great for all skin types, in particular those who suffer from excessive oiliness throughout the day.
Best for Dry Skin
Liz Earle for Men Cleanse & Polish – 100ml – £14.75
Dry skin is lacking in sebum from under-active sebaceous glands and therefore needs additional moisture even during the cleansing process. Dry skin can also be a sign of barrier function disruption, meaning the skin is unable to retain moisture effectively enough to hydrate itself.
The Liz Earle for Men Cleanse & Polish is a rich and creamy non-foaming cleanser so provides additional moisture and protection during cleansing. The muslin cloth (included) provides a gentle exfoliation to help avoid the ‘flaky’ appearance associated with dryness and ensures any topical moisturiser or hydrating serum work more effectively.
Best for Sensitive Skin
NYR Men Purifying Face Wash – 100ml – £15
A sensitive skin is an over-reactive skin. Although all skins can suffer from sensitivity at times, we generally refer to this as being ‘sensitised’ rather than being ‘sensitive’. A true sensitive skin is the results of a compromising barrier function and is generally a genetic predisposition.
The NYR Men Purifying Face Wash is a mild vegetable based cleanser infused with antioxidants to provide skin support during the cleansing process. With Rooibis and Calendula for anti-inflammatory and calming properties to soothe a sensitive and reactive skin. While natural essential oils provide antibacterial properties to protect a compromised barrier function.
Best Time Saving Cleanser
The John Masters Organics MEN Eucalyptus & Algave 2-in-1 Facial Wash and Shave Foam is a fantastic option to satisfy even the busiest of men. In fact it probably takes longer to say the name than it does to use it!
If you have time to shave, then you have time to cleanse your skin. It’s also ideal for travel as cuts down on vital wash bag space carrying only one product instead of two!
It’s suitable for all skin types and contains multiple antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients including eucalyptus, white tea, willow bark and Agave extracts. As it’s aloe vera based it’s very conditioning to protect the skin during cleansing and shaving.
Best Budget Cleanser
ManCave WillowBark Face Wash 125ml – £5.95
Even men on a tight budget need to take care of their skin and now, there is no excuse!
An SLS-free foaming wash, ManCave WillowBark Face Wash contains Aloe Vera, Willow Bark, Green Tea and Spinach to protect the skin during cleansing with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory support, to deep cleanse the skin without overly drying.
At less than £6 it’s a great budget option for men who still want to look after the health of the skin without breaking the bank in the process.
