Whether you dabbled in your teen years or are a total devotee, home hair dyeing is something most of us have experimented with at some point. It’s no longer a case of picking between three or four colours – there are literally hundreds of bright, bold and fun shades available, and it’s more tempting than ever to pop on those ever-so-sexy plastic gloves and get dyeing! However, there are always pitfalls to try to swerve – here’s our 5 Worst Hair Dye Mistakes To Avoid!
1. Picking The Wrong Shade

If you’re a longtime blonde or brunette, we can understand the impulse to throw caution to the wind and go raven black, or blazing red. We’re all for trying something new, but when you’re going it alone with a home hair colour we’d probably suggest bottling it (sorry, couldn’t resist) and heading to a salon instead. A couple of shades either lighter or darker is usually fine, but anything more drastic and things could get a little hairy (I just can’t stop myself!).
2. Not Properly Preparing
There are lots of little things you can do to help your home dyeing experience to be smooth and fuss-free! Making sure you have plenty of dye for your hair length and thickness, putting out old towels you don’t mind getting dye-splattered, popping some moisturiser around your hairline to stop unwanted colour transfer to your skin…they all make a big difference!
3. Not Asking For A Helping Hand

We know that you’re a strong, independent woman but there’s no harm in asking for a bit of help, especially when it comes to beauty! We’re sure you could look fierce and fabulous totally on your own, but why risk it when a helping hair dye-hand could take your colour from freak to fabulous? True friends won’t mind lending half an hour to help you achieve your dream ‘do – just be sure to return the favour one day!
4. Ignoring The Instructions

Like it or not, the instructions we receive with beauty products are there for a reason – OK, so we don’t really need a list of steps to apply a basic eyeshadow, but when it comes to hair dye: pay attention. Every formulation is different, and each individual product could require a new method of mixing or application. Take a few minutes to study the accompanying leaflet before starting your colour journey and your luscious locks will thank you!
5. Going Too Permanent Too Soon

If you’re new to mixing up your hair colour, perhaps consider easing into it gently – making a permanent hair decision is a bit of a commitment (it will grow out and fade down of course, but that can take a while!) so we’d recommend dipping your toe into the water before diving in headfirst. Try a temporary or semi-permanent option before setting your heart on one particular colour, and give yourself time to get used to the new hue. It will give you much more confidence when it comes to taking the plunge!
