Unwash Co-Washing Hair System Review

January is usually the month where we start to detox after all the excesses of the festive period. I thought I’d get a head start, literally, and try one of the newest hair cleansers on the market, Unwash.

Based on the idea of co-washing (conditioner washing) the idea is to cleanse the hair and scalp without using the normal system of shampooing followed by conditioner. The idea in co-washing is that dirt is gently removed whilst moisture is locked in. At unwash, they believe that the traditional hair washing methods we use are too harsh given the fuss free, low product styles we prefer today.  None of their products contain sulphates, parabens and detergents often found in hair products either.

There are 4 products in the range that can be purchased separately or in kit form. They are: Bio-Cleansing Conditioner, Anti-Residue Cleanse, Hydrating Masque and Dry Cleanser. All are intended to gently cleanse the hair without stripping moisture or colour, but each have their own special features.

Unwash Bio-Cleansing Conditioner

Bio-Cleansing Conditioner is designed to be your every day shampoo and conditioner replacement. This all-in-one is applied to wet hair and massaged from the scalp to the ends. Being a sulphate free formulation there is no lather. This in itself takes a bit of getting used to, but you just work the product through. After working through rinse thoroughly.

I have a tendency to rinse my hair a little longer than usual as any residual product (from any brand) causes issues with my fine hair. I rinsed a little longer than normal as I’ve tried cleansing conditioners before and found they do need it.

I’ll be honest I’m one of those people who likes their hair to feel silky smooth when wet and this didn’t feel that way. I gave it the benefit of the doubt though and once my hair was dry it did feel soft, not as much as usual but it was soft. The best way I can describe it was that it felt like “second day hair” which is actually one of the product claims.

Unwash Anti-Residue Cleanse

The Anti-Residue Cleanse is for those occasions when a deeper clean is needed, maybe after the Christmas party when, let’s be honest, we all use a little more hairspray than we need. This is a like a Ctrl-Alt-Delete for your hair. On my fine hair it’s quite a heavy product so will be reserved for those such occasions.

Unwash Hydrating Masque

The Hydrating Masque is perfect for after colouring hair or for when hair just needs a little tlc. Applied like any masque would be to the ends of the hair and combed through after 3 minutes, hair feels smooth and silky but without being weighed down.

Unwash Dry Cleanser

Lastly my personal favourite of the bunch is the Dry Cleanser. We all need dry shampoo from time to time and this one in my opinion is one of the best. Used like you would any other dry shampoo, this little jade can of wonder contains volcanic ash to absorb oil at the roots. Conditioning is provided by vitamin E and panthanol. Plant extracts provide a little oomph and bounce.

The scent of all of these products was lightly floral and very clean smelling. It was one of my favourite aspects. I won’t be replacing my regular shampoo and conditioner as I just cannot get my head – excuse the pun, around not having a lather. But I will incorporate Unwash into a detox once or twice a month to give my hair a little extra boost.
