Skinceuticals HA Intensifier Serum is a multifunctional serum to help amplify the skin’s Hyaluronic Acid levels. I’ve been getting really into skincare recently (check out my Neostrata review) and have been seeing such great results for my efforts. When you start learning about how the skin works and how to work with it you can really make some headway with skincare and get some visible results.

Skinceuticals HA Intensifier Serum- The Science Bit

The H.A. in Skinceuticals new serum stands for Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid is a molecule that is found in skin and what it does, is trap water, masses of it. Essentially, Hyaluronic Acid is what makes the skin plump, babies skin is packed with it. As we age we start to lose Hyaluronic Acid, it gets broken down faster than we can make it. After the age of twenty, ageing and UV radiation damage causes a gradual decline of HA in the skin. I hate to be all doom and gloom, but you can’t just pop a HA rich cream on and all will be well. HA is a big molecule and won’t absorb into the deep layers of the skin. Ideally you want your own skin to start making the Hyaluronic Acid itself. This is where Skinceuticals HA Intensifier can sort you out.

Skinceuticals HA Intensifier is designed as a solution to the skin’s Hyaluronic Acid decline. It contains these key ingredients-

  • 10% Proxylane– Proxylane is a kind of sugar that is found naturally in Beech trees. It was found that Proxylane can be absorbed into the skin and triggers the skin to produce new GlycoAminoGlycans (don’t worry if you don’t know what that means, you can trust me, it’s a good thing)
  • 2% Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate aka Licorice root and 0.2% Purple Rice Extract– these two increase the precious Hyaluronic Acid by preventing it from being broken down.
  • Three forms of Hyaluronic Acid– full molecular weight for moisturising the top layer of skin, fragmented bits of HA and encapsulated chains of Hyaluronic Acid that will soak into the deeper layer of skin to increase it’s plumpness.

Skinceuticals HA Intensifier is a triple threat to wrinkles and skin laxity. It stops the breakdown of the skin’s natural plumping agents, gets the skin cells producing more and HA Intensifier contains 1.3% Hyaluronic Acid to soak into the skin for instant results. It attacks the problem of ageing, sagging skin from all angles and is clinically proven to increase skin plumpness by 23% over 4 weeks use.

My Experience with Skinceuticals HA Intensifier

Skinceuticals HA Intensifier comes in a purple dropper bottle with a pipette dispenser. The bottle is deliberately a purple colour to prevent UV light from breaking down the active ingredients. There is a stopper in the neck of the bottle- a bit like you get in a mascara tube, that cleans the excess serum off the pipette. This is a nice touch, which makes for neater dispensing.

The serum itself is a surprising dark red colour and has quite a thick consistency. I inadvertently put my finger in my mouth after applying it and it tastes of Licorice!! (I’m not suggesting you lick face serum by the way).

Skinceuticals advise using HA Intensifier twice daily on clean skin. Results should be seen in about 4 weeks. You can apply HA Intensifier to the face, neck and décolletage but I’ve been mainly using it around my eyes, where I have some fine lines. I only need a couple of drops to cover my eye area, so the 30 ml is going to last a really long time. Skinceuticals also recommend using a sunscreen.

On applying Skinceuticals HA Intensifier the skin is moisturised. I do find that when the serum is fully absorbed it leaves a little tackiness. I don’t find it great for wearing under makeup, there is some pilling, it doesn’t like being rubbed after it’s dry. This is fine, I just use it at night.

There’s definitely an immediate plumping effect and I swear I have less crinkliness after a few week’s use. I’m hoping to see more improvements after a few months; the first weeks have been very promising. I haven’t had any irritation whatsoever, even on the sensitive skin by my peepers.

Skinceuticals HA Intensifier has proven active ingredients and clinical trials showing it’s effectiveness for targeting wrinkles and signs of ageing. It’s suitable for all skin types, even dry skin. Find it here
