Retinol (vitamin A) is the proven anti-ageing ingredient which everyone is talking about at the moment and for good reason. Retinol has been proven to visibly reduce the signs of ageing, improve skin tone and texture and increase the firmness of skin. It really is the dream ingredient that you need to be using, to not only improve your skin but to also help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. So I was thrilled to be asked to try out Pestle & Mortar Superstar Retinol Night Oil.

Pestle & Mortar have only recently released Superstar – its retinol night oil. This is going to be the next wonder product, and perhaps a cult classic. Superstar really is an apt name for this non-irritating night oil that revitalises and repairs your skin while you sleep.
Although there are now quite a few Retinol products on the market, the strength of the Retinol is really what dictates how effective a treatment is. Pestle & Mortar’s Superstar Retinol Oil contains the next generation of Retinol, HydroxyPinacolone Retinoate (HPR), which is similar to the type of Retinol only available on prescription. But don’t think that this means the Superstar Night Oil will be stripping or irritating, it’s not at all.
The Night Oil is a luxurious oil which is easy to apply after your night time cleanse. You can use Superstar either on its own or followed by your usual night cream.
Other ingredients in Superstar and their benefits:
- Retinyl Palmitate – this Retinol boost helps to fight free radical damage, increase collagen and elastin production. Also corrects sun damage pigmentation.
- Grapeseed Oil – reduces pore size and fine lines, tightens skin and improves elasticity.
- Black Cumin Seed Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Jojoba Oil – help to provide a smoother, more youthful, healthy complexion.
- Organic Rosehip Oil, Carrot Oil, Sunflower Oil – work together to stimulate cell growth and repair damaged skin.
I found there to be an almost peppery smell from the oil, which I think is the Black Cumin Seed. This smell is not over powering and after a few uses, I am now used to it.
The texture of the oil is spot on – it’s not too runny and you can really work it onto the skin. My skin feels hydrated and plumped but not at all sticky or oily. My skin feels comforted.
I have been using Superstar for nearly two weeks now and my skin is clearer, looks healthier appears firmer. I have had no irritation at all from using this oil.
All Pestle & Mortar products are free from parabens, mineral oil, silicones, sulphates, propylene and animal derived raw materials and are all cruelty free.
