The gym is a new phase for me and I’m absolutely loving it. I’ve been a member since September but I’ve only regularly been going since January. I like to workout around 3 times a week and I’ve got myself a personal trainer too, it’s safe to say I’m dedicated. With my new found love of exercise, I’ve found that my muscles are aching pretty badly. I’ve upped my intake of vitamins, discovered bath salts and I’ve been trying the Optiat Pick Me Up Coffee Scrub in Lemongrass Lifter to re energise my skin and spirit!
Optiat (One Person’s Trash Is Another’s Treasure) are the first company in the world to take used Arabica coffee grounds and transform them into naturally-scented exfoliating coffee scrubs for the body and face.
Over 55 million cups of coffee are drunk every day in the UK, which represents a big waste problem; more than 500,000 tonnes of coffee grounds are sent to landfill every year in the UK alone. You might imagine that these coffee grounds are harmless but they are highly polluting, decomposing to methane, a greenhouse gas with more than 20 times the global warming capacity of carbon dioxide!
Armed with this knowledge Optiat try and put these grounds to good use; they collect from over 40 artisan coffee shops, bars and restaurants across London and manufacture scrubs by hand at a facility in Dorset. The products are completely vegan, natural and aren’t tested on animals.
When this landed on the doorstep, I could instantly smell the product. It’s an up-lifting, lemon scent with a coffee edge; if you’re very sensitive to smells, this might not be for you. The scrub itself is a thick, black colour and Optiat claim that the Lemongrass Lifter will refresh you and leave your post workout skin with a fresh feeling.
To use the product, it’s obviously best if you have just done a workout as that’s when you’ll feel the uplifting and refreshing effects; although you can use this whenever you fancy. I find the scent is good for first thing in the morning when you need a little wake up! All you need to do is dampen the skin and then scrub into the skin using circular motions. I thoroughly enjoyed this part as I love the feeling of exfoliation.
The only downside is you have to leave for 5 minutes and when you’re standing in a shower cubicle, that’s pretty hard to do. I decided to wash my hair and although I didn’t actively target my body, I did find that some of the scrub washed away. That being said, you could definitely use this product as a normal exfoliating scrub and not waste the 5 minutes. Did it refresh me? Yes, I felt clean and the smell definitely refreshed me. Did my skin feel softer and nicer? Yes, it did – coffee scrubs are an excellent exfoliator. Would it use it after every workout? Probably not but it’s lovely to use after a pretty hard session at the gym as a little pick me up! Did my muscles feel relaxed? Not really but then again it doesn’t claim to relax muscles, although there is a Vanilla Velvet fragranced version that claims to help you relax and unwind.
As well as the Pick Me Up Lemongrass Lifter option Optiat also comes in Feel Great- Mouthwatering Mandarin, Hit The Sheets- Vanilla Velvet and The Hungover- Potent Peppermint, so there’s a scrub for every occasion!
