Deciem are doing SPF!! I know this is going to be music to the ears of many, not least mine! As an SPF obsessive, it is extremely exciting, yet no surprise, to learn that NIOD, from Deciem, are tackling the topic in a brand new and fresh way. Here’s the lowdown on NIOD Survival SPF 30, Survival 20, Survival 10 and Survival 0, all available really soon.
NIOD Survival is a range of four products that each offer up protection systems to support and promote healthy skin defenses against environmental and lifestyle aggressors.
There is quite a lot to take on board with this new range but the long and the short of it is that they have been designed to protect your skin from ALL external aggressors across UV, pollution, stress, device radiation and more. There are three levels of day-time products and a night time product without SPF to continue protecting throughout the night when UV is not an issue.
For my skin type, the products I’d choose are Survival 30 for day and Survival 0 for night.
NIOD Survival Product Range
The number of each product relates to the UV protection each one contains but there is a lot more to these products than SPF. In fact, one contains no SPF at all. They all have lightweight textures that come in dropper bottles:
- S30 Survival 30 – SPF 30 here £25
- S20 Survival 20 – SPF 20 here £24
- S10 Survival 10 – SPF 10 here £23
- S0 Survival 0 – no SPF here (for use at night) £20
NIOD Survival products target the effects of
- Oxygen radicals including the superoxide radical, nitrogen radicals, carbonyl radicals
- Glycation
- Pollution and smog
- Stress
- Infrared & blue light
The Survival formulas contain fractionated melanin to protect against High Visible Energy (HEV) light. They avoid the use of all chemical sun blocking agents that can lead to further oxidative stress.
Survival 30, 20 & 10 use mineral-only UVB & UVA protection, whilst Survival 0 does not offer UV protection and has been formulated for nighttime use. Survival 0 can also be used in addition to other sun protection products that only cover UV.
Non UV Protection Technologies across all Survival Products
- Purified Lutein from non-GMO marigold flower – carotenoid antioxidant counteracts adverse effects of blue light & increases visible dermal elasticity
- Yeast-Derived Superoxide Dismutase Superoxide protects against oxidation and reduces inflammation
- Fractionated Melanin – tailored specifically to absorb light in the range of 400-500 nm wavelengths
- Pycnogenol – highly-potent antioxidant derivative of maritime pine, supports a wide range of protective functions while minimizing and reversing the appearance of photo damage
- Tomato Carotenoid Complex – targets a broad range in the invisible light spectrum and reduces the appearance of redness associated with light exposure
- Prebiotic Complex of Gluco-Oligosaccharides and Inulin – skin prebiotic complex supports friendly skin micro-organisms without stimulating harmful ones
- Deep-Sea Algae (Alteromonas Ferment) – forms a physical shield against urban pollution and smog both of which contribute significantly to premature ageing
- Mediterranean Brown Algae (Padina Pavonica) – supports calcium bio-availability, essential to protective functions of healthy skin
- Knotgrass – fights visible adverse effects caused by infrared while helping to prevent and reduce the appearance of photo damage
UV Protection Mechanism in Survival 30, Survival 20 and Survival 10
The UV protecting formulations avoid the use of all chemical sun blocking agents and instead use a refined dispersion of micronized ZnO (Silicone-dispersed Zinc Oxide) and TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) in flexible, high-volatility, non-comedogenic silicones.
This allows the formulations to remain extremely lightweight because it means relatively low amounts of ZnO and TiO2 can be used. The main UV protective element is ZnO because it is actually also able to absorb UV rays without creating oxygen radicals as well as reflecting and refracting light.
NIOD Survival SPF Values
Third-party studies have confirmed the Sun Protection Factor for each Survival product and they are actually higher than stated to leave a higher margin of assurance. The actual tested SPFs are as follows:
- S10 – Survival 10 is 13.7
- S20 – Survival 20 is 22.7
- S30- Survival 30 is 33.1
Which NIOD Survival SPF Product do you need?
If in doubt, go for Survival 30 for day and Survival 0 at night. However:
- s30 – Survial 30 is intended for lighter skin tones (I, II and III within the Fitzpatrick skin tone scale)
- S20 – Survival 20 is designed for medium and darker skin tones (III, IV and V within the Fitzpatrick skin tone scale)
- S10 – Survival 10 is designed for darker skin tones (V and VI within the Fitzpatrick skin tone scale) and when UV index is low (under 2)
NIOD say that if your skin is on the lighter side, or the UV index is high. If your skin tone is lighter or in the presence of a higher UV index, you should use a formula offering a protection level of at least SPF 20.
NIOD Survival 0
As I have already said, S0 is not a daytime UV protection product but a night time protection product. It is designed help support environmental defense in the absence of material UV exposure and the perfect product to aid night time repair.
