On a daily basis I tend not to spend a fortune on haircare, as high end haircare isn’t something I can afford. However, at the weekend I do try to use luxury haircare as I like to look my very best, and I do find that it is something that really does make a difference to how my hair looks and feels. I recently had the opportunity to try out two products from the Leonor Greyl collection; the L’Huile De Leonor Greyl and the Leonor Greyl Nourishing Shampoo.
Leonor Greyl haircare was created by hair and beauty fanatic Leonor, and engineer and botanist Jean-Marie. They met in 1968 and eventually created a collection of haircare products using plants and natural ingredients. One of their very first products was the L’Huile de Leonor Greyl, which is a pre-shampoo treatment, and now one of their most iconic products.
L’Huile de Leonor Greyl (£29)
The L’Huile De Leonor Greyl (£29 here) is a pre-shampoo nourishing oil, which is formulated with natural oils to provide nourishment, detangle, soften the hair and repair dry or colour treated hair.
Unlike most haircare products this oil comes packaged in a classic glass bottle, which already tells me how much of a high-end product this brand has created.
At first the oil appears solid, but you simply pop it under hot running water to make it become fluid. Before applying shampoo and even before rinsing the hair, apply the oil to the lengths and ends of the hair, evenly distributing it with either a natural bristle brush or your fingertips. You then leave the oil on the hair for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse out.
If you prefer to leave treatments on longer, you can of course do this. You can also leave it on overnight, if that is your preference.
L’Huile de Leonor Greyl – Results
One of the specific benefits of the L’Huile de Leonor Greyl, is that it protects the hair from the damaging effects of sun, sea water and chlorine. Therefore, rather than having to treat sun-damaged hair, you can also prevent damage occurring, simply by popping a small amount of the formula through the hair whilst in the sun or the sea.
After using the L’Huile de Leonor Greyl for just a couple of washes, I found that this deep conditioning treatment nourished not only the ends of my hair, but the lengths too. I have fairly long hair that is colour treated, and so I do end up with split ends. After using this pre-treatment my ends not only look smoother, but also feel smoother and more polished too.
Another problem I sometimes get with having long hair are the tangles! Oh the tangles! When I visit the hairdresser, even they comment at how tangled my hair seems to be. However, after visiting my hairdresser yesterday for a cut and colour, she commented at how much easier my hair was to brush.
The only negative to this oil is the texture, which can seem quite thick. Equally, you don’t want to add too much of it at once, especially if using as a sun protectant, as it can give a slight greasy appearance to the hair. However, so long as you are careful with the amount used, you shouldn’t have a problem with this.
Leonor Greyl Nourishing Shampoo For Long, Dry, Thick or Frizzy Hair
Leonor Greyl have a variety of shampoos for different haircare needs, and the best one for my hair type is their Nourishing Shampoo for Long, Dry, Thick or Frizzy Hair (£28). Taking away the thick part, my hair is pretty much everything else on that short-list, so this is the shampoo which is best for me. Leonor Greyl call this a Shampoo Cream, which I was a little pessimistic about at first. After using an oil on my hair, would a cream shampoo then make it too heavy or greasy?
However, once you open the bottle, it isn’t a cream texture, it is more a regular transparent formula. The Shampooing Creme Moelle de Bambou (yes, that’s its full title), is specifically for hair like mine, that is long and has dry ends.
Its formula has been based on natural active ingredients such as wheat derivatives, carrot, silk proteins and bamboo marrow. It repairs the hair fibres from the very first application, which certainly sounds impressive! I must admit I did wonder why I hadn’t received a conditioner along with my shampoo. It turns out that this is because this product not only cleanses and regenerates the hair, it also conditions it too. I like this idea- I’m all for saving time in the shower or bath, so I was certainly pleased about that.
Leonor Greyl Nourishing Shampoo Results
As I had already used my pre-shampoo treatment, and because I have long hair, you don’t rinse with water, you wash the oil out with the shampoo, which I did find unusual. But, I was so pleased with the results that I decided not to question the instructions.
There are further application instructions, such as adding small amounts of water whilst working the shampoo into the hair, but nothing too laborious.
If you prefer scent-free haircare, then this wouldn’t be for you, but I personally loved the fresh fragrance. I didn’t find that the shampoo irritated my scalp in the slightest, so if you have sensitive skin then the Nourishing Shampoo would be fine for you.
After applying my oil and then shampooing, I dried my hair as normal, gently patting it with a towel. As previously mentioned, even when simply brushing my wet hair, it felt so much easier to work with. It was a lot less knotty, and dried as normal time-wise.
I have now used the duo three times, and already my hair feels so much healthier, even after having it coloured at the hairdressers, which can sometimes dry my hair out. It definitely works at nourishing and conditioning the hair almost instantaneously. Whilst this isn’t something I could afford to use on a daily basis I have definitely enjoyed the benefits of using it, and will continue to use it at weekends and on special occasions.
