Kind Natured Love Curls Low Poo Shampoo and Conditioner

In recent months I have quit all the straightening and hair abuse and I’m way more up for embracing my natural curls than I used to be. It could be that all the heat and chemicals just don’t feel right any more or that fashion has changed. Also, It could well be that I just don’t have any time to spend blow-drying these days. It’s time to find out what my natural hair is really like, which means cutting out the chemicals you find in most hair products, which actually do your hair no favours in the long term.

Low poo refers to shampoo that contains no sulphates or silicones. Sulphates, aka Sodium Laureth Sulphate or SLS, are the ingredients in shampoo that bring the bubbles and lather. Sulphates also strip the hair of natural moisture, so even though we love the clean feeling they give, sulphates are no good for the health of your hair.

The other secret hair enemy that you will find in most hair products is Silicone. Silicones are what gives shampoo and conditioner their lovely slippery feel. They’re bad because they gunk up the hair cuticle and weigh the hair down. You’ll be able to spot a silicone in the ingredients list because the all end in “-one”. I know from personal experience that it’s really hard finding a hair product that doesn’t contain silicone.

This is the ideal shampoo to try if you’re considering going low poo. I’ve tried sulphate free shampoos before and they can be hit and miss. Some sulphate free shampoos don’t lather, which can feel a bit wrong when you’re washing your hair. Kind Natured Love Curls froths up just fine. The bubbles come from ingredients derived from coconut. It has a floral fragrance that I’m not entirely sold on – it’s not horrible, just a little old fashioned. Love Curls Smoothing Conditioner is a fab silicone free conditioner. As well as the Bamboo and Sea Kelp, it also contains Coconut extracts. It has a similar floral scent to it. It has a thick moisturising feel to it and I need a good 50p sized blob to coat my beyond shoulder length hair. The instructions advocate leaving Love Curls conditioner on for 5 minutes to turn it into an intensive conditioning treatment which gives the curls an occasional moisture boost. Find it here

I’ve been getting great results using the shampoo every second or third day and the conditioner every day. I mainly concentrate on rinsing the conditioner from my roots and leaving a little in the length. If I gently scrunch dry with a t shirt straight from the shower and let my hair air dry I get really bouncy shiny curls.
