What is Iris&Romeo Weekend Skin?

Weekend Skin SPF 50 is a 3-in-1 product combining mineral SPF 50, skincare and a sheer tint. It uses 10% non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, along with time-release vitamin C and 3% niacinamide. The formula also contains vitamin E, German chamomile, jojoba esters and allantoin to help hydrate and soothe the skin.

The brand describes the finish as luminous and dewy. On my skin it is more of a healthy, softly radiant finish.

It is also formulated without chemical sunscreens, synthetic fragrance, mineral oil, parabens, sulfates, PEGs, phthalates or formaldehydes.

My Review

Iris&Romeo Weekend Skin gives you that softly perfected, healthy-looking skin without looking like you are wearing makeup. There is a tint, so it does give some coverage and evens things out, but the finished effect is very natural. It is light on the skin, has a subtle glow and, importantly for me, it doesn’t turn into one of those tinted SPF products where you can feel that you are wearing a layer of makeup.

The texture and finish

I really like the texture of Weekend Skin. It feels light and comfortable on the skin, with a moisturising feel but without being heavy or greasy.

The finish is softly glowy rather than glossy, and it gives the complexion that slightly perfected, healthy look without making it obvious that you are wearing makeup. It is very much my skin, but better.

I think the name is actually very appropriate because this is exactly the sort of base I would reach for when I want my skin to look fresh and even, but don’t really want to look as though I’ve done a full face of makeup.

Coverage

Weekend Skin gives sheer-to-light coverage, so this isn’t a foundation replacement if you are looking for something that will properly cover pigmentation, redness or imperfections.

For me, though, the amount of coverage works really well for this type of product. It takes the edge off redness, evens out my complexion and gives me a little bit of colour, while still allowing my skin to look like skin.

It has less coverage than Dr Sam’s Gossamer Tint, which is another SPF 50 tinted product I really enjoy. I find Gossamer Tint a little more substantial and slightly glossier on my skin, whereas Weekend Skin feels lighter.

If you know me at all, you’ll know that SPF 50 is non-negotiable for me, so having it built into a complexion product like this is a big plus.

I wouldn’t rely on this alone as my only sun protection during the height of summer, when I am being particularly careful about UV exposure, but coming into autumn and winter I think it is a really useful compromise between a dedicated SPF and a product that provides complexion coverage too.

One of the problems with makeup products containing SPF is that you need to apply enough product to achieve the stated level of protection. If the product is highly pigmented or heavy, applying that amount can leave you looking as though you have put on far more makeup than you actually wanted.

I don’t find that with Weekend Skin. I can apply a generous amount, blend it properly into the skin and still have a very natural-looking finish.

How it blends

Universal Glow looks a bit yellow on my skin tone when I first put it on, but once I work it properly into the skin, the colour blends beautifully and looks much more natural.

You do need to take the time to blend it properly, particularly because you want the SPF evenly distributed across the skin rather than sitting in patches.

Around the eyes

This is another big tick for me because I can use Weekend Skin all over the eye area without it stinging my eyes. It also feels moisturising around the eyes without becoming heavy or greasy, which is exactly what I want from an everyday complexion product with SPF.

Packaging

The packaging is simple and practical. It comes in a plastic tube with a pump, which makes it easy to dispense and use.

I like this type of packaging for a complexion product because it is straightforward, hygienic and easy to control how much product you are applying.

Is it worth it?

At $50 for 35g, Weekend Skin is definitely on the expensive side for an SPF. And because you need to use enough product to achieve the advertised SPF 50 protection, it isn’t something I would describe as a particularly cheap everyday sunscreen.

That said, if you find a product that you really enjoy using and that combines SPF, complexion coverage and skincare in one step, I think there is value in that.

For me, the appeal is that it doesn’t feel like I am compromising on the amount of SPF I apply just to get a nice-looking complexion. I can use a generous amount and still have that light, natural finish.
