Ever since I discovered how much environmental pollution contributes to skin ageing, I have been obsessed with it. So I was super keen to start using Arden’s latest anti-pollution product that has been five years in the making. Here’s the low-down on the brand new Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Hydrating Shield.

This isn’t just about protection in the sun, it’s an every day, all year-round shield from the pollutants that are ageing our skin. I think the shield element is key to this. In fact, one of the features I am most drawn in by is the fact that this shield actually catches the pollution particles and stops them penetrating into the pores. Then, when you wash your face, you wash the pollution away too! That’s what hooked me.

Whilst defence against pollution is the key element on this product, there’s a lot more going on too.

For a long time I thought I just needed to protect my skin from the sun, and I have been doing that meticulously all year round, but now I know that protection from pollution is just as important. With 100% Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen (micronized Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide), UVA & UVB is taken care of.

The Anti-Pollution Shield helps defend the skin against harmful toxins and pollutant particles. As pollution particles are smaller than pores, without it they can penetrate the skin and cause damage. City Smart delivers a semi-permeable film former that blocks pollution particles but doesn’t block pores. When you cleanse your face at the end of the day, you remove the shield along with the blocked pollution. Excellent!

Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart also contains Arden’s powerful antioxidant Idebenone along with  Green Tea, Thiotaine, Ferulic Acid and L-Carnosine, for anti-ageing, and helps to prevent free radical damage in the form of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and loss of firmness.

Finally, the product contains a DNA Enzyme Complex that uses purified enzymes derived from Plankton, Arabidopsis Thaliana, and Ocean Bacteria extracts. This also helps protect against free radical damage and also strengthens the skin’s natural repair process.

You simply apply this as the last step in your skincare regime. You’ll notice it’s tinted which I absolutely love. It offers very light coverage and I find that it subtly evens out redness and uneven tone, and gives my skin a lovely juicy finish. It works very well under makeup.

The texture is light and melts into the skin easily. For pollution protection, one application per day is enough, but if you are also using it for sun protection, then you’ll need to reapply throughout the day.

I have actually just downloaded an app on my iPhone called Plume which tells you how polluted the air is where ever you are and at whatever time. From a bit of research I know that I am definitely going to be using City Smart in Vegas at Christmas come rain or shine!
