I hadn’t heard of luxury home fragrance and body care brand ECOYA before. However, the natural soy Ecoya candles sounded dreamy, so I thought I’d trial the Sweet Pea and Jasmine one. If Sweet Pea and Jasmine aren’t your thing, other combinations include french pear, coconut & elderflower, lotus flower and vanilla bean.

I haven’t been burning anything during the warmer months as I’m far more inclined to reach for a candle when the weather’s horrid and I need comforting. So,  I was intrigued to see whether this summery-sounding fragrance would have me reaching for the matches.

When I unboxed this beauty I had a feeling I was in for a treat.  It comes in an elegant glass jar with an embossed silver lid that can also be used as a stand. There’s a quote on the box from Auckland-raised Isaac Sinclair, the ‘nose’ of the brand, who’s developed fragrances for Guerlain, DKNY, Lancome and L’Oreal.

Instead of using traditional paraffin wax that contains all sorts of nasties, ECOYA make their candles from natural waxes with cotton wicks.  These burn for longer with less waste and less need to trim. As they’ve been created in collaboration with leading fragrance experts, their candles promise to release the optimal fragrance throw.

Around only 20 minutes after lighting it, the room was filled with a really beautiful, delicate fragrance. Described as ‘the very essence of floral elegance’, sweet pea and white jasmine smells like a field of flowers, carried on the breeze. Although the throw of fragrance is intense, it’s never heady or sickly. This is because the uplifting notes of cucumber and watermelon add extra fruity freshness. I’ve used it a few times now and it’s already become a firm favourite. It burns really evenly and gives off a gentle fragrance that’s never intrusive.

I burnt this while I was relaxing in front of a film with a glass of wine but I think it would be equally wonderful before bedtime or as part of a pamper session as it’s very soothing. It would make a great gift for an eco-conscious friend or candle fanatic looking to incorporate something more luxurious into their collection.

ECOYA candles have an RRP of £15 for 50g, £32 for 270g and £39 for 400g. A generous 400g gives you up to 80 hours’ burn time.
